地质

Program 和 研究

The 地质 program in 的 E&ES department covers several research areas including surface processes/geomorphology, soil geomorphology, 沉积学, 构造,  mineralogy/petrology, 和 petroleum geology. We have eight active faculty contributing to 地质 program teaching 和 research.

什么是地质学?

The undergraduate 地质 program at 365彩票在线过滤 covers 的 traditional subfields of geology including surface processes, mineralogy, petrology, structural geology, 沉积学, 和 earth history while also emphasizing newer subfields such as computational methods 和 remote sensing. 365彩票在线过滤 is surrounded by exceptional geological outcrops, 和 students in our undergraduate program have 的 opportunity to master field interpretation 和 mapping skills in a world-class natural laboratory.

Our 地质 graduate 和 research program focus areas include continental 构造, geodynamics, computational geoscience, 沉积学, surface processes, sediment transport dynamics, soil geomorphology, 和 experimental petrology.

研究

Sedimentology 和 Tectonics: This research group, led by 瑞安猜疑的, seeks to underst和 的 tectonic evolution of orogenic systems around 的 world through 的 lense of 的 sedimentary record. Because orogens (mountain belts) are quickly eroded after 的y form, 的y are not long-lived geologic features 和 are not well preserved in 的 rock record. 这种材料 eroded from mountain belts is however, often deposited 和 archived in adjacent sedimentary basins, 和 的 study of 的se basins can reveal 的 timing, geometry, causes, 和 paleoclimate associated with past mountain building events. Current study areas include 的 Ancestral Rocky Mountains system, 的 Anadarko Basin, 的 Miocene-present geologic evolution of 的 Rio Gr和e Rift, 和 的 Cenozoic evolution of 的 orogens associated with 的 India-Asia Collision in sou的rn Tibet.

地球微生物学:  The study of microbe-mineral interactions. Microbes catalyze many important geochemical transformations in 的 environment, 和 have been doing so for more than 3.50亿年 年. Active geomicrobiology research in Dr. 丹•琼斯’ lab includes microbial sulfur cycling, microbe-mineral interactions in cave systems, 和 bioremediation 和 microbial contaminant transformation.
